Cat Fashion Democracy

Rare  and Exotic

The Peterbald breed was created during the latter half of 1994 in St.Petersburg, Russia, the result of mating a Don Hairless (also known as Donskoy) with an Oriental Shorthair female by Russian felinologist Olga S. Mironova.

The first two litters produced  four kittens, which were the original founders of the breed.

In 1996, the breed was adopted into the Russian Selectional Feline Federation (SFF) and given a standard and an abbreviation (PBD).

In 1997 the breed was adopted into The International Cat Association (TICA) with the abbreviation PD, and in 2003 in the World Cat Federation (WCF) with the abbreviation PBD.

Coat Types

Peterbald cats come in 4 amazing coat types;

Cats are born completely without hair.

Cats are 70% hairless and will have a coat of up to 1mm in length.

Cats have a short coat with wiry hair up to 5 mm long.  This coat type is unique to the Peterbald --- no other breed of cats has a brush coat.

Cats have a short coat with normal whiskers.

Peterbalds resemble Oriental Shorthairs.  They are elegantly slim, graceful and have a muscular build.  They have a  narrow and long head with a straight profile, almond-shaped eyes, wedge-shaped muzzle, and large set-apart ears.  They have a long whip-like tail, webbed feet and oval paws.

This type of cat is surely a unique cat. It has different features of common cats. For example, it's very vocal for a cat, he is like a shadow with his owner, constantly at his side and greets you at the door at the end of the day. If these are caracteristics and qualities you enjoy, than this is the cat for you and your family.

Maintenance depends on the coat type of the peterbald (naked, brush, velour or straight coat). My recommendation is to wash the cat as needed, but at a minimun every three months with an oatmeal based soap. You must also include in your mantenance routine the following:  clean their ears, brush their teeth, trim their nails and clean their eyes.
